Taste of History

'Tween Waters Inn off Sanibel Island is historically flavorful.

The resort property is located between the Gulf and San Carlos Bay.

The 75-year-old ’Tween Waters Inn — between the Gulf and San Carlos Bay near the tip of the Sanibel-Captiva islands off Fort Myers — combines a historical Florida flavor with a 1940s ambiance.

The inn’s accommodations include 19 cottages, renovated with historical themes. One honors the local Buckingham Army Air Field, which played a part in World War II. Another pays tribute to President Theodore Roosevelt, who used to fish for manta rays at the inn. Two cottages are named after aviator Charles Lindbergh and author Anne Morrow Lindbergh, who wrote “A Gift from the Sea” in Captiva.

Two other cottages showcase the works of artists and conservationists Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling and Roger Tory Peterson. The remaining cottages have fish, bird and plant themes. They range from one bedroom to three and rent for $255 to $405, depending on season.

’Tween Waters also has traditional hotel rooms and suites. Rates for a standard room range from $200 to $285 a night.

The inn’s Old Captiva House restaurant used to be a one-room schoolhouse for children of the island’s settlers.

Adventure packages take two guests on a private flight from the ’Tween Waters Marina and include a two-night stay in the Charles Lindbergh cottage, two rounds of golf, spa services, dinner and a sunset cruise. Other packages combine fishing, golf and spa treatments; sailing, kayaking, seashell collecting and hiking through the Ding Darling Nature Preserve; golf and spa; or shopping and spa.
