Why the Florida homeowners insurance crisis should worry the whole country

Thanks to mounting hurricane losses, home insurance premiums in Florida have risen an astonishing 300% in the last five years.  The soaring rates in Florida reflect how frequently the state is battered by devastating storms. But Florida is hardly alone. Climate change makes wildfires more likely in states like California. Flooding is also exacerbated by climate change — not only in low-lying coastal states like Louisiana, but also in parts of the Midwest. Kentucky and West Virginia are among the several states particularly vulnerable to landslides. More from Yahoo News.

It's not just Jeff Bezos — Amazon's looking for office space in Miami, too

Amazon is looking for 50,000 square feet of office space in Miami, the ecommerce giant told Business Insider. The news came just weeks after founder Jeff Bezos announced he was moving from Seattle to Miami to be closer to his parents and to Blue Origin's operations in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Former JEA execs on track for federal trial in February, though it could be delayed

Two former JEA executives facing federal charges of conspiracy and wire fraud are still on track to face a trial in February, though defense attorneys raised the possibility of asking for a delay. Former JEA CEO Aaron Zahn and Chief Financial Officer Ryan Wannemacher were indicted in March 2022 for their alleged roles in a proposed bonus plan that could have paid out millions of dollars if the city-owned utility was sold, as was being considered in 2019. They both pleaded not guilty to the charges. More from the Jacksonville Daily Record.

Your out-of-town visitors will have to make do with typical Sarasota-region attractions this holiday season, but Mote Marine Laboratory’s aquarium at Nathan Benderson Park should be ready for them next time around. Speaking recently to Sarasota County commissioners, Kevin Cooper, Mote vice president for communications and strategic initiatives, said the organization is targeting a general public opening in a little more than a year, with several milestones along the way. More from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

The 321: Tacos & Treats Throwdown offers tasty food and much more

Thank goodness the 321: Tacos & Treats Throwdown is a two-day event this year, because otherwise it could well be a case of too many tacos, too little time. Event organizer Battle Bros have extended the time to Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 2 and 3 for the Third Annual Throwdown, billed as Central Florida’s biggest tacos and desserts festival.
