Florida sports betting saga not over, despite court win

This week, the U.S. Supreme Court sided with the tribe by rejecting a petition filed by two casino operators who sought to overturn a 2021 state gambling compact that gave the Seminoles exclusive authority over sports betting in Florida. However, a Nova Southeastern University law professor doesn't think the latest court decision will lead the Seminole Tribe to relaunch its sportsbook. [Source: Axios]

Florida researchers developing system to forecast where smelly sargassum seaweed is headed

Over the summer, millions of pounds of sargassum floated onto Florida's east coast beaches, piling up on the sand. For the last decade, researchers have been studying a 5,000-mile-long stretch of seaweed from the shores of West Africa to the Florida Keys, known as the "Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt." In recent months, large clumps of it have washed ashore on Florida's east coast. [Source: FOX Weather]

Brightline launches search for Treasure Coast station site in Martin, St. Lucie

Brightline, which touts itself as "the nation’s only provider of modern, eco-friendly intercity passenger rail," estimates the new station would be completed by the first quarter of 2028. On Thursday, Brightline began accepting proposals from private and public landowners in Martin and St. Lucie counties. The application deadline is Dec. 22. Meetings for potential applicants will be held Nov. 28 and 29, in Martin and St. Lucie counties, respectively. [Source: Florida Today]

Florida leaders pass on Biden’s solar panels for low-income families

Florida officials passed on an opportunity to secure up to $400 million in federal money to help low-income households install solar panels, disregarding an initiative by the Biden administration to promote clean energy in disadvantaged communities.
