Dual insurance crises hitting Florida customers with no end in sight

Everyone in the state of Florida is familiar with the ongoing property insurance crisis. But another type of insurance has started to see rates that are leaving Floridians in an unaffordable state. According to data from Kelley Blue Book, Florida has seen car insurance rates rise 30% over the last year. More from WFTS.

Jacksonville City Council creates second homelessness committee in just over a year

Less than one year after a City Council working group issued a 59-page report on homelessness and related initiatives, it formed another committee dedicated to putting a price tag to potential solutions. City Council President Ron Salem announced the creation of a special committee on homelessness and affordable housing Tuesday. He charged members with creating actionable items with a budgeted cost for implementation. More from the Florida Times-Union.

South Florida’s Walmart gig drivers feud over deliveries, say they’re losing money to bots and cheats

Delivery app workers for Walmart stores throughout South Florida have become embroiled in a bitter feud with other drivers who they say are using fake accounts and bots to grab the best orders while claiming certain parking lots as their turf. A small group of the gig workers rallied outside of the Walmart on Broward Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale Tuesday morning, demanding that the company take action against the “scammers.” More from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The Pinellas beaches issue that won’t go away: short-term rentals

Redington Beach Mayor David Will recently led a roomful of his fellow municipal officials and a few state lawmakers through a crash course in short-term rentals and the related topic of home rule. The issue has haunted Pinellas beach communities for years, as thousands of residences have been repurposed and the state Legislature has whittled away at the state’s “home rule” concept, through which the state Constitution recognizes that municipalities can enact their own ordinances and self-govern. Most groups ever receive $4.16 million in Orange County cultural-tourism grants

Orange County commissioners unanimously approved the most money ever for the cultural tourism grant program on Tuesday — nearly $4.2 million. More organizations than ever were recommended to receive the funding, said Terry Olson, administrator of the county’s Arts & Cultural Affairs department, and some received extra money through a new initiative to encourage established cultural entities to work with up-and-coming groups spotlighting cultural diversity. It’s Fort Lauderdale’s turn to flash as boat show opens to throngs of well-heeled yachtsmen, novice mariners

For marine industry aficionados, Cannes was festive and Monaco was super. But now, it’s Fort Lauderdale’s turn to be center stage as host to the world’s biggest in-water boat show. From a windswept roof atop the city’s Las Olas parking garage along the Intracoastal Waterway, city and Broward County politicians and promoters ushered in the five-day 64th Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show on Wednesday with a mutual sense that the city’s burgeoning marine industry will be delivering another round of good fortune.

Manson fingerprints, ‘Exorcist’ manuscript on display at Central Florida museum for Halloween

While many Central Floridians are gearing up for Halloween with simulated horror and creepy costumes, a new museum in Lake Mary is showcasing letters from murderers, fingerprints of assassins and other dark, macabre manuscripts this weekend. The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, which has locations in nearly a dozen cities around the United States, is pulling from its collection of more than 10,000 letters, documents, sheets of music and sketches to show spooky manuscripts for Halloween.
