This Tampa Bay ex-lawmaker thinks he can solve Florida’s housing crisis

In the state of Florida, half of all renters spend more than 30% of their income on rent. Another 945,687 very low-income households spend over 50% of their income on housing. That’s according to research from the Florida Policy Project, a non-partisan think tank started earlier this year by former state senator Jeff Brandes. In June, the group released a report on housing affordability and proposed several solutions for how to tackle the problem in Florida. More from the Tampa Bay Times.

More businesses left than moved into Orlando ZIP codes since 2020, analysis shows

While it does not show the whole story, roughly 1,100 fewer businesses moved into metro Orlando than moved out in the last three and a half years. That’s according to data from the U.S. Postal Service, which tracks the number of businesses requesting an address change to a new ZIP code from January 2020 through June 2023. Hurricane Ian’s assault on southwest Florida last fall is speeding a transition already occurring in some of the state’s coastal communities — driving out middle- and working-class people and replacing them with deep-pocketed buyers. In the waterfront cities of Fort Myers Beach and Cape Coral, even homeowners with flood insurance are finding they often cannot afford the costs of rebuilding their houses to modern building codes, as federal rules demand. Instead, many ended up selling their properties as vacant land. More from Politico.

A site in the new Uptown Boca center that its developer had reserved for Amazon Fresh is now slated to house another store owned by Amazon — Whole Foods Market. And a planned store location that Amazon leased in Plantation in October 2021 is the subject of a lawsuit filed by the store’s landlord seeking unpaid rent. More from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
