Teddy bears, bedroom sets and brand new cars — what's fueling inflation for Florida companies?

There is no must-have, rush-out-to-the-store, fight-the-crowds toy this year. Nothing like what the toy industry has experienced during past holidays.  But there is something that almost every thing has this holiday season — inflation.  Prices for all kinds of items have been trending considerably higher for months now. Food and fuel prices are known to make big swings, but the higher prices have captured other categories — including things like new and used cars, furniture and toys. More from WLRN.

State, local governments stand to lose millions under pitch to axe aviation tax

State and city governments may lose millions under a proposal that would axe the sales and use tax levied upon aircraft in Florida. Under a Republican-sponsored bill (SB 786 & HB 6051), Florida would lift its 6% levy on aircraft purchases to make the state more appealing to aviators. The tax, which does not apply to airlines, is levied at the time of sale. More from Florida Politics.

Mayor Buddy Dyer: Downtown Orlando is ‘well positioned’ to grow post-pandemic

Facing questions from a gathering of a few hundred local and business leaders, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer handicapped the city’s odds of hosting World Cup matches as favorable, championed its efforts on addressing homelessness and housing affordability and pitched Orlando as a city prepared to take on a post-COVID-19 world. “The pandemic has ushered in a realignment in how people live and work,” Dyer said from a stage on the sideline of Exploria Stadium. “Downtown Orlando is well-positioned to take advantage of these new dynamics.” More from the Orlando Sentinel.

Rate hikes eyed for Citizens Insurance customers

The Citizens Property Insurance Corp. Board of Governors this week will consider a proposal that could lead to average rate increases of 7.3 percent for homeowners. The proposal also could lead to average increases of 10.8 percent for condominium unit owners and 9 percent for renters, according to information released Monday by the state-backed insurer. Miami airport reports first month of passenger volume growth after 19-month pandemic slump  

Miami International Airport said Monday that in November, for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began in March 2020, the airport recorded more passengers in a month than the same period in 2019 before the public health crisis. The airport had 3.9 million ticketed passengers pass through security last month, compared to 3.7 million passengers in November 2019, a 6% percent increase. More from the Miami Herald.
