› Sarasota-Manatee beekeepers keep the honey flowing
As beekeepers go, James Cutway of Myakka’s Gold Apiary considers himself a big little guy. “If you’ve got 100 colonies of bees you’re not making a full living from bees from that 100 colonies,” said Cutway, who characterizes himself as a sideliner in an industry where the state considers anyone with 100 colonies of bees or more a commercial operation. “I kind of refer to myself as a professional beekeeper, rather than a commercial beekeeper,” he added.
› Work begins on $15M container park project
Construction has commenced on KRATE, the $15 million outdoor container park planned for the Grove at Wesley Chapel, a 250-acre shopping center acquired by Mishorim Gold Properties $64 million in September 2019. According to a press release, crews have installed the first set of containers — 17 in all. They will be occupied by nine tenants, primarily restaurants.
› Jacksonville Zoo mourns death of rare, aging Amur leopard
A rare Amur leopard popular with keepers and visitors at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens had to be humanely euthanized because of debilitating, age-related health problems. Zoo officials announced the death of Nicolai, who would have turned 19 this month, in a news release Sunday on Facebook.
› Massive UCF-managed Arecibo telescope collapses in Puerto Rico
Scientists and Puerto Ricans lamented on Tuesday morning the collapse of one of the most powerful telescopes on the Earth, managed by the University of Central Florida and owned by the U.S. National Science Foundation. The 1,000-foot wide Arecibo Observatory radio telescope platform collapsed in Puerto Rico ending an era of space exploration, officials told the Associated Press. It was the second largest telescope on the planet.
