New Florida gun legislation prompts spike in sales

Background checks for gun purchases spiked as Florida lawmakers debated gun reform measures in the wake of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Florida Department of Law Enforcement data shows. Between Feb. 22 — the day after a bill containing gun reform measures was introduced — and March 9 — when the bill was signed into law — FDLE processed 13,300 more background checks for firearms purchases compared to the same time period in 2017 — a 23 percent rise. On state bar pass rates, Florida sits near the bottom
