Governor ordered 'freeze on any and all' insurance rate hikes. But it's not that simple

Gov. Rick Scott’s Sept. 12 directive to Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier after Hurricane Irma pummeled Florida could not have been more clear. Florida voters have less sway in electoral college outcome

Florida has 29 electoral college votes. Based on the state's population size, that means that 327,700 votes were cast for every single electoral college vote — the highest number of votes cast per electoral vote in the country. In California, the most populous state in the nation, 258,900 votes are cast for every single electoral college vote. Texas has a 236,700:1 ratio. The state with the lowest ratio is Wyoming, at 85,300:1. More from Axios.

Florida Madoff victims to begin receiving recovered money

Florida is home to the second-largest pool of Madoff’s victims, with 63 victims in Sarasota County and a handful in both Manatee and Sarasota counties. One in five victims were from Florida, particularly concentrated in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. More from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Small business defaults rise in Florida

PayNet, the leading provider of small business credit assessments on private companies, announces that in July 2017 the percentage of Florida’s small businesses defaulting on existing loans has risen. Of the 18 major industries, defaults rose in 11 and fell in 7 in the state compared to the previous month. Read the full press release here.

Jacksonville-based Haskell Co. names new president

Haskell has named its third president in the company’s 52-year history. James O’Leary, who has been chief operating officer, is assuming the president’s title immediately, the architecture, engineering and construction company announced Tuesday. North Port approves final Atlanta Braves agreement

florida The Atlanta Braves are officially relocating their spring training to a new stadium complex in North Port. More than 2 1/2 years in the making, the plan received its final public approval from the North Port City Commission Tuesday, after Hurricane Irma forced a weeklong delay.
