Florida researchers on the cusp of Citrus Greening cure

As the University of Florida’s Citrus Research and Education Center prepares to celebrate its centennial anniversary, researchers there say that they’re on the cusp of developing a cure to the most serious threat facing the citrus industry worldwide: citrus greening. University of Florida researcher and Microbiology professor Nian Wang, Ph.D. is using a revolutionary gene-editing technology called CRISPR, (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats), that could hold the key to a cure. Scallop delay affecting Florida businesses

Florida's much-anticipated scallop season was scheduled to start last Tuesday, but an algae bloom in St. Joe Bay prompted state wildlife officials to call it off for at least two weeks and maybe longer across North Florida. [Source: WJHG]

Tropical Storm Emily comes and goes, leaves little damage

Tropical Depression Emily is moving out over the Atlantic early Tuesday, a day after slogging across the Florida peninsula, where it brought drenching rain and power outages. According to the National Hurricane Center, Emily now has, "maximum sustained winds near 30 mph with higher gusts. Some slight strengthening is possible during the day or so, but Emily is also forecast to lose its tropical characteristics within a day or two." More from the AP and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
