› Competition opens for Florida Book Awards
Established in 2006 and now the most comprehensive state book awards program in the nation, the contest recognizes and celebrates the year’s best books written by Sunshine State residents.

› Alachua County relatively untouched by opioid epidemic
In May Gov. Rick Scott declared that Florida is experiencing an opioid epidemic and cited a public health emergency in part because of a steep rise in overdose deaths. But Alachua County has been relatively untouched.

› First Coast counties see record jump in tourism spending at hotels in first half of 2017
Tourists came to the First Coast in significantly high numbers in the first half of the year. Tourism bureaus in Duval, St. Johns and Nassau counties reported the first six months of this year brought notable increases in multiple tourism statistics.

› Celebrities from entertainment and sports icons show up for El Clasico Miami
Hard Rock Stadium was definitely the place to be in Miami on Saturday night. Among the 67,000 fans in the building were many familiar faces.
