Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin

Since it opened 15 years ago, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin complex between Epcot and MGM Studios has been known for the whimsical teal and coral décor created by famed architect Michael Graves.

The namesake figurines still tower atop the sister hotels. But this summer, Disney's largest convention property and popular leisure destination underwent a quiet metamorphosis -- its 2,265 rooms and two lobbies were renovated. Among the changes: Replacing sea horse lighting fixtures with hand-blown Czechoslovakian glass chandeliers.

The project wrapped up a month early, says Eric Opron, director of sales and marketing for the complex. More changes are in store: This fall, the two hotels' 329,000 square feet of meeting space will get new carpet, paint and fabrics. Management is also looking at sprucing up the outdoor pool and garden areas, Opron says.

In addition, the hotels are spending up to a half-million dollars each to redesign eight presidential suites. Although the Swan and Dolphin are separate hotels, they operate as one re under the Starwood umbrella, with the Swan carrying the Westin brand and the Dolphin affiliated with Sheraton.

Rooms go for $179 to $329 a night.
