Out of This World

Diane Sears | 12/1/2006

Two astronomy professors, including one from Orlando, have pinpointed distinct day and night temperatures on a planet in another solar system.

By using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, a team led by Joseph Harrington from the University of Central Florida and Brad Hansen from the University of California at Los Angeles measured infrared light emitted by the planet upsilon Andromedae b, which orbits a star 263 trillion miles from Earth in the constellation Andromeda.

Scientists hope to eventually discover another planet that could sustain life.
