Carbon-Neutral Playing Fields

John M. Dunn | 9/1/2008

Carbon In November 2007, the University of Florida Gators played the nation’s first carbon-neutral football game against the Florida State University Seminoles. And now the university wants to make all its home games neutral. Gainesville-based International Carbon Bank and Exchange calculates that all the human activity involved with just one UF football game generates nearly 2,000 tons of carbon. To offset this, Earth Givers — a local non-profit group — plans to distribute energy-efficient light bulbs, donate funds to maintain a forestry protection project and install solar panels on a UF building.

Is this the start of a trend in the world of sports? Last summer, the Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays played their own carbon-neutral game. An estimated 440 metric tons of carbon dioxide generated by the game will be offset by investments in reforestation projects.
