Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection wants more of the state’s hotels and motels to adopt the agency’s “green lodging” standards. Small wonder: In 2007, 84.5 million people visited Florida. About half of them stayed in a hotel, motel or overnight facility and consumed a big share of natural resources.
More than 200 properties across the state have earned the designation since the Green Lodging Program began in 2004, and almost 400 applications are pending. Among the Sunshine State’s newest Green Lodgings are the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa in Bonita Springs, the Palm Plaza Oceanfront Resort and Beachside Motel in Daytona Beach and a cluster of new cabins at Lafayette Blue Springs State Park.
