Construction has started on the 100-acre, $280-million Sports Performance Hub in Homestead. The project will include a 10,000-seat multipurpose stadium where the FC Miami soccer team will play, along with a small hotel, a sports academy and public facilities for tennis, pickleball, basketball and more. It is backed by several retired professional athletes, recently adding retired San Antonio Spurs star Manu Ginobli. It's set to open in 2028.
RELOCATION
City leaders are hailing Palantir Technologies' decision to move its headquarters from Denver to Miami as a watershed moment for the area's tech scene. Palantir's data analytics systems have secured significant defense and government contracts and drawn detractors, especially at its Denver office that it opened in 2020 after leaving Silicon Valley.
DEVELOPMENT
A consortium including the Rubell Family, Neology Group and Lion Development Group plans to build a residential complex and arts district in the Allapattah neighborhood. The first phase, due in early 2029, will include 330 units in a 21-story tower close to a Metrorail stop and a block from the Rubell Museum. The plan aspires to create "a world-class cultural and residential destination, comparable to established arts districts in cities like New York's Chelsea (and) London's Shoreditch."
Construction started on Rilea Group's 300-unit Mohawk at Wynwood apartments, thanks to a $150-million construction loan from Nuveen Green Capital. Rilea President Diego Ojeda says Mohawk, set to open in 2028, "fuses punk rock, high fashion and renegade culture into an all-brick, steel and glass building."
Key Largo could be getting 79 workforce housing units near mile marker 95 after Monroe County's Planning Commission approved a proposal from Gorman & Co. The application invoked the Live Local Act, which streamlines zoning and permitting processes in exchange for rents tied to area median income.

Jordi Martinez-Cid is now president of the Cuban American Bar Association. Martinez-Cid is a commercial litigator who was a Jack B. Tate Memorial Scholar at Yale Law School and has been president of the association's Pro Bono Legal Services since 2020. Founded in 1974, the Cuban American Bar Association focuses on pro bono representation and human and legal rights issues affecting minority communities.
DEFENSE
A month after emerging from a quiet development mode, Miami-based Magnet Defense acquired Louisiana ship builder Metal Shark, paving the way for Magnet to produce autonomous surface ships for the U.S. and allied militaries. Metal Shark has made more than 1,100 vessels for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. Magnet Defense says it invested $50 million to design and test its M48, which can provide maritime intelligence and warfare capabilities in harsh conditions.
HOSPITALS
Carlos Migoya is retiring May 31 after nearly 15 years as CEO of Jackson Health System. Jackson's board accepted Migoya's recommendation that president and COO David Zambrana succeed him, calling Zambrana "the most prepared leader in Jackson's 107-year history."
EDUCATION
Plans by the College of the Florida Keys to add workforce education programs, possibly including commercial driver's license training and marine aquaculture, to a five-acre site on Big Pine Key are drawing resistance from environmentalists concerned it could threaten Key deer in the area. The site, which used to house a state prison camp, is near the National Key Deer Refuge. The college says it replaced a fence to keep wildlife out.

Midline Miami, a music venue in the heart of Wynwood, opened at the Arlo Hotel in the first quarter, offering a 10,000-sq.-ft. space that can hold up to 1,200 people.

Bagel Emporium is back in business with an expanded menu and full bar at Coral Gables' recently renovated 4000 Ponce office building. The 50-year-old deli now operates as Bagel Emporium & Grille.

A free water taxi service by the city of Miami Beach is shuttling people across Biscayne Bay from Maurice Gibb Memorial Park to the Sea Isle Marina in downtown Miami. Boats that can hold up to 55 people depart every hour starting at 7 a.m. weekdays, with two runs an hour during rush hour. Service is not offered on weekends. Each trip takes about 20 minutes.
