Florida's universities rank near the bottom of the country when it comes to providing enough full-time faculty for its students, and state education officials say there is no money to improve that.

The state Board of Governors, the policy-making body for state universities, released national data from 2005-06 showing that only hurricane-ravaged Louisiana fared worse. The board plans to discuss university funding at its meeting today and Thursday at Florida International University in Miami.

Florida universities average 29.7 students for every instructor who is tenured or on track for tenure, placing the state 49th nationwide. The national average is 24.5. Hawaii scored best with 16.8 students, while Louisiana is last with 30.8.
