Florida's Biggest 'Green Roof' Underway

Escambia Co. Central Office Complex Florida’s biggest “green roof” is under way in Pensacola, a 33,160-sq.-ft. topper for the new, $11.6-million Escambia County Central Office Complex building and also a research ground for Florida Department of Environmental Protection. DEP awarded the county a $1.4-million Urban Best Management Practices Research and Demonstration grant to help pay for the rooftop, to be covered with a soil-like growth medium to support vegetation, and for the pervious-material parking lot. The building is the largest of three such projects around the state where DEP will collect data on their green design’s ability to reduce rooftop energy transfer and decrease building and grounds stormwater runoff and pollution.
