Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton has rolled out two new education programs to deliver more nurses — and more nurses with a specialty in artificial intelligence and biomedical engineering.

An innovative FAU part-time nursing program held nights and weekends in Davie lets people who already have a bachelor’s in another field earn a bachelor’s in nursing. The first 86-student cohort graduated this year. “They’re working full-time jobs. They’re taking care of families. They might have children, spouses, partners, and so it’s difficult for them to enroll in a full-time program, which most nursing programs are,” says Safiya George, dean of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing.

About 400 students are enrolled in the program.

In the second program, the nursing college partnered with the College of Engineering and Computer Science to offer a combined bachelor’s in nursing and master’s in either biomedical engineering or artificial intelligence.
