St. Johns County, the fastest-growing in Northeast Florida, has seen its population increase by nearly 40% to an estimated 264,672. The county has only one hospital, but in recent months, two health systems with ties to Jacksonville have begun plans to build medical facilities.

In July, Ascension Florida and Gulf Coast announced plans to build a $115-million hospital in the northern part of the county at I-95 and CR 210. Tom VanOsdol, president and CEO of Ascension Florida and Gulf Coast, says “a high percentage of residents leave St. Johns County for their care. One of the things we believe is that health care is local and needs to be convenient and close to home.” Fast-growing Clay County will see two new hospitals.
