Performing a typical shoulder surgery takes Dr. Reuben Gobezie about 30 to 35 minutes. But the patient’s recovery may take up to a year, and during that time doctors may not know whether patients are following prescribed physical therapy protocols or how their rehab is going, Gobezie says. To better track and guide patients’ progress, Gobezie and Dr. Laurence Higgins, an orthopedic surgeon and vice president of strategic development at Naples-based medical device company Arthrex, came up with PT Genie — which uses a sensor-based system to guide patients through their exercises at home.
