Florida Trend has been recognized by the Florida Magazine Association as a finalist in five categories in this year's Charlie Awards. The awards celebrate excellence in journalism and design from magazines all around the state.

Among the five categories:

• Best Photography: Cover
• Best Digital: Magazine Website
• Best Advertisement: Self-Promotional
• Best Advertorial: Story or Section
• Best Overall: Writing

“It is an honor and privilege for Florida Trend to be selected as a finalist across five different categories of the Florida Magazine Association, Charlie Awards,” says David Denor, Publisher, Florida Trend. “It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire Florida Trend team.”

Over the years, Florida Trend has received several Charlie Awards by the Florida Magazine Association. In 2018, Florida Trend won a Charlie Award for Writing Excellence/Best Writing: Public Service Coverage (Water World) - Mike Vogel, a Charlie Award for Digital Excellence/Best Digital: Online Video - Moffitt Cancer Center, Dr. List - Joyce Edmondson and Robb Lee, a Silver Award for Digital Excellence/Best Digital: Magazine Website (FloridaTrend.com) - Joyce Edmondson and Robb Lee, and a Bronze Award for Design Excellence/Best Photo Illustration (Water World cover) - Jason Morton, Jeff Papa and Gary Bernloehr.

The winners will be announced July 12 at the Florida Media Conference at The Vinoy in downtown St. Petersburg.

About the FMA Charlie Awards

Recognizing achievements by Florida magazines since 1957, FMA's annual Charlie Awards competition crowns publishers, writers, editors, artists, photographers, printers, marketers and others as the best among their peers in scores of categories. Juried by recognized out-of-state magazine and newspaper professionals, and college journalism professors, hundreds of entries vie for first, second and third place awards—Charlie, Silver and Bronze.

Who was Charlie Wellborn?

Charles G. "Charlie" Wellborn Jr. was a 1958 graduate and later a professor in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida in Gainesville. A Georgia native, Lt. Col. Wellborn served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War, received two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. Starting in 1967, Professor Wellborn created courses in editing, graphics and business/technical communications that were the core of the public relations and magazine curriculum at UF for many years. His leadership of the Florida magazine industry, including FMA, earned Wellborn FMA's 1973 Achiever of the Year Award. Wellborn retired from UF in 1987 and FMA honored him by renaming its top award the "Charlie." Wellborn passed away in 2002 at age 77.
