The Florida Department of Transportation sought to reassure the public during a hastily called news conference Tuesday that cracks in the new Pensacola Bay Bridge are not a major structural concern.

"The No. 1 priority of FDOT is the safety of the public," said Jared Perdue, director of transportation development for the agency's Chipley-based District Three office.
