“It’s a very young group of people, and I think with that youth comes a lot of energy and a lot of excitement about what they’re doing. But it’s very unusual for this age range to be as committed as they are to the work, and I think a lot of the credit goes to the founders and creators of the company because it’s an environment that’s really built on having fun and a lot of mutual respect among the people in the company. Having come from a blue-chip company that had blue-chip benefits, these are much better than what I saw. There’s an old term in business school that I recall. (Psychologist Frederick) Herzberg did these hygiene factors, things that existed in business that you take out of the way so they don’t become roadblocks. This is an example of those hygiene factors. It’s not a topic. There’s nobody sitting around saying, ‘Oh man, I have to worry about x, y or z’ so those things are taken off the plate. Every Friday, we cater lunch for the whole operation, and it’s just part of the fun factor. It’s not a huge expense if you really looked at the cost.”
