The politics of lobbying are interesting, says Paul Bradshaw, president of Tallahassee’s Southern Strategy Group, but “for a quiet hour away, it’s nice to be on the farm’’ — a farm he shares with some of the rarest heritage livestock in the world, with a focus on exotic and beautiful chickens.

“A lot of these chicken breeds are going extinct,’’ says Bradshaw. “We’re using America as an ark to preserve them.”

Among two dozen rare breeds on Bradshaw’s 45-acre, four-employee Greenfire Farms in Gadsden County are the French Bresse, said to be the world’s best-tasting, and the Olandsk dwarf, a breed of which just 50 remain in the world.

In its six years, Greenfire has sold more than 75,000 chicks, priced from $40 to $2,000 a pair. “Every year, we grow,’’ says Bradshaw, describing a “quiet American revolution” nurtured by the growing-green culture, recent recession and the local food movement.
