Florida’s manufacturing workforce is 'aging out'

While Florida leads the nation in attracting and developing skilled workers, headwinds are approaching, according to Florida Commerce Secretary Alex Kelly. Florida is now third in the nation in terms of total manufacturing companies, but only 10th in the number of manufacturing employees, at approximately 430,000. Since 2014, Florida has increased manufacturing employment by 23.3% and, in 2022, the average annual wage for manufacturing jobs was more than $74,000. More from the Florida Phoenix.

Florida Chamber marks ‘Support Your Local Chamber’ Day

The Florida Chamber of Commerce is joining chambers across the country Wednesday in recognizing National Support Your Local Chamber of Commerce Day, a nationwide celebration of the organizations that advocate for businesses. Observed annually on the third Wednesday in October, the day highlights the role local chambers play in making their areas more competitive. From rural counties to major metros, more than 200 local and regional chambers make up the Florida Chamber’s statewide network. More from Florida Politics.

Dassault Falcon Jet celebrates $115M service facility at Melbourne Orlando International Airport

With a thickly carpeted cabin and that "new car smell," a luxurious 14-seat Falcon 8X business jet — which can cost upward of $60 million — took center stage at a grand opening ceremony for Dassault Falcon Jet's new Melbourne service complex. The state-of-the-art maintenance facility and paint shop will eventually create 400 jobs with average salaries of $86,120 as operations ramp up. More from Florida Today.

German tech firm moving U.S. headquarters to Midtown Tampa

A German technology company is moving its U.S. headquarters across Tampa Bay. TeamViewer plans to relocate from a Clearwater office park to Midtown East, the 18-story office tower under construction in Midtown Tampa on Himes Avenue, adjacent to Midtown’s dual-flag hotel and parking garage. The company, which specializes in remote desktop access solutions, has signed a lease for 26,389 square feet in Midtown East. More from the Tampa Bay Business Journal.

Miami probes whether taxpayers get money’s worth from county

The City of Miami is launching a departmental review to determine whether residents and businesses are getting their money’s worth from taxes paid to Miami-Dade County. During last Thursday’s meeting, Miami commissioners discussed the city’s share of property taxes paid to Miami-Dade County and raised concerns that residents and businesses may be subsidizing services that primarily benefit other areas. ‘It’s like forbidden fruit’: Florida’s stone crab season kicks off Wednesday

Before Florida’s stone crab season officially kicked off on Wednesday, restaurants, wholesalers and seafood markets all say early signs point to healthy supply and claw prices mirroring what they were last spring. The first crustacean harvests will arrive at seafood purveyors by Thursday morning, a day after traps are allowed to be pulled by state law, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which sets guidelines on how stone crabs must be caught.

Dr. Jeffrey Smith, a surgical oncologist with the Breast Care and Melanoma/Sarcoma Centers at the Orlando Health Cancer Institute in Ocoee, says evidence has grown in the last five to 10 years that a DNA analysis of a form of breast cancer tumor can direct the decision on whether to also use radiation therapy. Smith, a University of Florida-educated doctor, says it’s all part of “de-escalating” care.
