When you’ve stayed in a place so long, you really do feel it become a part of you.
“It created an atmosphere with positive, well-behaved tenants,” he said.
No one wanted to leave [The Greenland] because the rent was so cheap, said 32-year-old Joseph Kenny, who’s lived there for almost nine years.
The apartments had a way of attracting people in need of a fresh start. They offered tenants the chance to move out of their parents’ homes, ditch their roommates, escape abusive relationships and finally pay off their student loans.
You won’t find The Greenland Apartments listed on Zillow or Apartments.com. For decades, the only advertisement has been word of mouth, or maybe a sign posted outside.
Located in St. Petersburg’s Old Northeast neighborhood, where homes regularly sell in the millions, the humble 18-unit complex offers monthly rents as low as $680 for a studio or $780 for a one-bedroom.
The neighbors all know one another.
