"People get attached to seahorses."
"Squirmin' Herman," the scrappy seahorse William Pendley saved from his shrimp trap, has created quite a stir, lately. And this bottom-dweller has plenty to say about the health of the Indian River Lagoon. So saddle up — it's all good.
Pendley, of Cocoa Beach, caught this seahorse he dubbed "Squirmin' Herman" while shrimping close to midnight May 8 in the Banana River Lagoon near Kelly Park.
Seahorses are 'sentinel' creatures, that can signal changes in an environment, much like a canary in a coal mine. Some environmentalists are hopeful that the lagoon's health is improving.
"This has really turned into something much greater than I could have imagined and it's all good news for Brevard's waterways," Pendley said of all the buzz he and Herman have gotten lately. "Love it."
