More than 100 high school seniors and their parents sat in Orlando’s downtown soccer stadium eager to celebrate their graduation from a college-readiness program.

Then came the surprise.

The two-year scholarships students were expecting would be doubled, and four years of schooling would now be theirs, free of charge.

“I have the distinct honor of delivering a surprise that will change the trajectory of your entire college career forever,” said Bethany Lacey, the CEO of Take Stock in Children, the state-run organization that often provides two-year scholarships to participating students, at the Wednesday evening celebration.
