The front door of Arlington Community Services facing Rogero Road is where clients enter the building and meet with volunteers who load up shopping baskets with food for them to take home.

The back door is where donors drop off the food those same volunteers will use to restock the shelves.

Lately, both the front and the back door have been far busier than usual for this time of year.

"We have a lot of folks that are desperately looking for food and they just line up outside," Arlington Community Services Executive Director Mary Louise Weber said.

The capacity of food pantries like Arlington Community Services — which draws its support from churches and depends on volunteers to do the work of lifting and loading — will be further tested this month with the cutback of SNAP benefits during the prolonged federal government shutdown.
