Nora Egozcue waited patiently at the lectern in St. Petersburg City Council chambers as her mother lowered the microphone for her to be heard.

Nora smiled. She told the City Council about how she and her mom helped paint the Pride flag mural on Central Avenue. It was a lot of fun, she said, and Nora painted the dark blue stripe in honor of her Uncle Keith, who recently died.

“When I was painting that stripe, I felt like I was giving a piece of that stripe to him,” said Nora, 8. “The Pride flag is like a big, warm, big hug from the city to say, ‘You matter.’

Nora was one of about 30 people who asked the council and Mayor Ken Welch on Thursday to protect the Pride and Black History Matters street murals. They were joined by others who held signs, chanted and spoke of resistance to state overreach earlier on the steps of City Hall.
