Florida attorney general’s office fights a ruling on a lobbying restriction

Pointing to securing the “public trust,” Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office has asked a federal appeals court to overturn a decision that blocked part of a 2018 state constitutional amendment imposing new restrictions on lobbying. U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom this summer issued a permanent injunction against a restriction on state and local officials lobbying other government bodies while in office. Bloom said the restriction violated First Amendment rights. More from The News Service of Florida.

St. Petersburg has plenty of questions about the Rays stadium deal

St. Petersburg city council members got their first chance Thursday to drill down into the proposed agreement to build a new Rays stadium and redevelop the historic Gas Plant district. A $1.3 billion stadium and development deal is complicated. And, council members were ready to talk details about everything from the issuance of bonds to green spaces. More from WUSF.

Canada’s Porter Airlines set to serve 5 Florida cities. Beer, wine, Wi-Fi come with fare

Canadian discount airline Porter Airlines will land for the first time in Florida next week, kicking off eventual flight service to five cities in the Sunshine state, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Touting itself as offering passengers an “elevated economy experience,” Porter runs counter to the airline industry in that with the price of airfares comes beer, wine, Wi-Fi and snacks — and there’s none of the sometimes dreaded middle seats in the cabin. Nearly 4,000 new homes: GL Homes’ plan after a proposed land swap is a no-go

GL Homes, the developer whose land-swap proposal was rejected by Palm Beach County this week, still plans to construct nearly 4,000 homes on land it owns — but not in the agricultural region known as the Agricultural Reserve. The company on Tuesday expressed disappointment that its proposal involving the Ag Reserve didn’t win approval, and noted how it still will move forward with alternate plans in the northern part of Palm Beach County, in the Loxahatchee area. Parents search for financial literacy for kids not getting it in high school

In the financial literacy classes being taught across Florida for the first time this year, students are learning about money management, debt, different types of bank accounts, credit scores, and how to file taxes. It counts as a half credit toward their graduation. Fourteen-year-old Emersyn Moore's financial literacy education started at the age of 11 when her mom downloaded an app called Busy Kid. The $4-a-month app allows kids to check off chores and other work they do to earn an allowance. More from ABC Action News.

Breast Cancer Research
Collateral Damage

Advances in chemotherapy and radiation treatment have helped millions of patients survive breast cancer. But that often comes with a cost of severe heart damage. In a 2022 study published by the National Institutes of Health, 40,800 breast cancer survivors — nearly 8% of all survivors tracked between 1975 and 2016 — died of heart disease. New studies and approaches offer the promise of reducing or even eliminating that collateral damage.
