Economist: Florida has ‘teflon economy' for next recession
While the timing of a national economic slowdown seems to keep moving, Florida’s economy should weather it well — and even grow — says economist Sean Snaith. In his latest quarterly Florida forecast, Snaith says the impact of a slowdown won’t stick to Florida as it has in past recessions. “Florida’s economy today is more like Teflon. A lot of the effects of a national slowdown will just slide right off,” Snaith says. More from UCF News.
Tropical depression likely to form in the Atlantic soon: Will it impact Florida?
The National Hurricane Center is monitoring Invest 94L, which is forecast to become a tropical depression very soon. "Environmental conditions are expected to remain conducive for additional development, and a tropical depression is likely to form during the next day or so while the system moves westward to west-northwestward across the western tropical Atlantic toward the Lesser Antilles," the NHC said in an advisory Wednesday morning. Tampa developers could pay more in transportation impact fees
Tampa may impose higher fees on developers to improve its transportation network, according to a draft document prepared for Mayor Jane Castor’s administration that has yet to be presented to city council. The report analyzed how the city is losing out on millions due to an outdated fee structure that was last updated in 1989. Orlando Magic set new timeline for $500M downtown entertainment district
The Orlando Magic’s long-awaited $500 million sports and entertainment complex across from the Amway Center downtown has a development team and an anticipated start in 2024, according to a report in GrowthSpotter. Developers JMA Ventures LLC and Machete Group Inc. have been appointed to spearhead the project alongside SED Development LLC and the Orlando Magic. Miami-Dade votes to battle state for control of its expressways
Miami-Dade commissioners on Tuesday voted that control of five Miami-Dade expressways that a state-created body began operating in August is to be legally returned to the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority that long had run them. The county vote said the state had no legal authority to run the expressways because the takeover violated the county’s home rule charter granted by the state in 1956. The county legislation says the commission’s actions – supported Tuesday by the mayor as well – will legally restore control to the ousted authority. More from Miami Today.

Filmmakers conned out of $20,000 will make revenge fantasy movie in Tampa
When engaged filmmakers Shane Brady and Emily Zercher were conned out of $20,000 by a hacker during the 2021 purchase of their Texas home, the normally upbeat couple had dark thoughts. No one was charged with the crime, but Brady said they wondered what would happen if they sought vigilante justice. Instead, the couple will play out their revenge fantasy through the movie “HACKED: A Double Entendre of Rage Fueled Karma.” It will be shot all over Tampa Bay near the end of this year.

Florida stone-crab prices are in: How much will you pay at markets, restaurants?
Ready to crack into some Florida stone crabs? Customers have some claws for optimism: Costs at most fish markets, restaurant menus and wholesalers are nearly the same as they were at the start of last season, reversing a trend of record-high prices set in 2021 and 2022. As Florida’s stone-crab season gets underway this week, seafood purveyors from Broward and Palm Beach counties and even the Gulf Coast are all reporting strong customer demand — and mostly healthy supply.
