Florida citrus forecast improves over last year when hurricanes hit state
Still recovering from Hurricane Ian, Florida’s citrus industry is expected to see an increase in production after last year’s storm-damaged crop. But an initial forecast for the 2023-2024 growing season, released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, projected that orange production will be half of what it was two seasons ago. In addition to recovering from Ian, the industry continues to face pressures ranging from development to a decades-long battle against citrus greening disease. More from WGCU and the AP.
Hurricane center ups odds for Caribbean-bound system while Tropical Storm Sean churns
The National Hurricane Center increased the chances a system bound for the Caribbean will form into the season’s next tropical depression or storm while Tropical Storm Sean continues to swirl in the Atlantic. The developing system is a broad area of low pressure in the eastern tropical Atlantic several hundred miles south-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands producing limited and disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity. US Supreme Court puts hold on ruling that allows Seminoles to offer sports betting in Florida
The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday at least temporarily halted an appeals-court ruling that would allow the Seminole Tribe of Florida to offer sports betting throughout the state. Chief Justice John Roberts issued an order imposing a stay after the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia this summer upheld a gambling deal between the state and the tribe that included sports betting. What the loss of federal stimulus money could mean for Florida child care
The obstacles that come with finding child care are only growing as a program providing child care funding to states during the pandemic ended last month.
