Inflation and Hurricane Ian weaken October consumer sentiment

After four consecutive months of modest increases, consumer sentiment among Floridians dropped 3.4 points in October to 61.1 from a revised figure of 64.5 in September. “The decline in October comes as no surprise as this month’s reading captures the impact of Hurricane Ian, which made landfall September 28 in Southwest Florida and caused business closures, job losses, extensive property damage, and significant human loss,” said Hector H. Sandoval, director of the Economic Analysis Program at UF’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research. More from UF News.

Health department challenged on pot licenses

Heeding a legal blueprint laid out by an appellate judge, a Tampa-based orchid grower has filed a lawsuit accusing the Florida Department of Health of violating the state Constitution by delaying the issuance of nearly two-dozen medical marijuana licenses. The lawsuit, filed Monday in Leon County circuit court, is the latest attempt by Louis Del Favero Orchids, Inc. to enter the state’s medical-marijuana market. The company’s other administrative and legal challenges over the past four years have fizzled. More from the News Service of Florida.

TIAA Bank's headquarters and main base of operations will remain in Jacksonville and the bank will operate under a new name. That will ultimately mean a new name for the home of the Jaguars. The report by Unite Here Local 737 found that 69% of hospitality staff surveyed at five Orlando employers, including Walt Disney World, struggled to pay their rent or mortgage each month and 39% worried about becoming homeless.
