US inflation pressures further intensified in September

Inflation in the United States accelerated in September, with the cost of housing and other necessities intensifying pressure on households, wiping out pay gains that many have received and ensuring that the Federal Reserve will keep raising interest rates aggressively. Consumer prices rose 8.2% in September compared with a year earlier, the government said Thursday. On a month-to-month basis, prices increased 0.4% from August to September after having ticked up 0.1% from July to August. More from the Tampa Bay Times.

Small business emergency loan program launched for businesses impacted by Hurricane Ian

"I’ve still got a loan from small business administration that I got during COVID, so if I have to get another loan, it’s good that it’s zero percent, SBA is 3.5, still good too, it’s just, I need a way to operate to be able to pay it back, otherwise I’ll be deeper in a hole if I get those money and that money, what am I going to do," said Christian Dina, the owner of La Rocca Italian Restaurant in North Port. South Florida startups raised $1.3B in Q3. Here are the top deals

Technology startups headquartered in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties collectively raised $1.3 billion in venture capital funding across 75 deals during the quarter that ended Sept. 30, according to the Pitchbook-NVCA Venture Monitor third quarter report. Although the dollar amount was up from the second quarter (when local companies raised $1.1 billion across 92 deals) deal counts declined – meaning fewer companies received capital injections. America’s largest dessert festival is coming to Tampa

 When Shonnika Denise saw on social media last year that Dessert Wars, dubbed “the largest dessert festival in America,” was coming to Tampa, she cranked up her oven and her creativity. After the judges dubbed her Snickers Cupcake the winner, she quit her job at the post office. With her trophy in hand, she dove head-first into her cottage dessert and cake business.

FIU’s Linda Fenner 3D Mobile Mammography Center offers free screening for those in need

 The American Cancer Society recommends that women begin getting yearly mammograms at age 40. But when a 56-year-old woman walked into Florida International University’s Linda Fenner 3D Mobile Mammography Center, she admitted that she had never gotten a mammogram. Then, when nurse clinician Lorraine Nowakowski asked her to sign some consent forms to begin the mammogram, the woman started to leave. “She had told me: ‘I have to leave right now.’ And I asked, ‘Well, why?’ And she said, ‘I don’t know how to read,’” says Nowakowski, an RN and clinical director of operations for FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. “And then I said, ‘Well, I can read you the consent forms."
