Three Finalists Picked for FGCU Presidency

A search committee Monday named three finalists to succeed outgoing Florida Gulf Coast University President Mike Martin.

The finalists hold university leadership positions and have deep backgrounds in higher education.

One of them, Robert Gregerson, president of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, previously was dean of Florida Gulf Coast’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Another finalist, Tod Laursen, is acting president of the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute.

Before taking that job last year, Laursen was provost and senior vice chancellor for New York’s university system from 2018 through 2020.

The third finalist, Susana Rivera-Mills, has served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Ball State University since 2018.

Rivera-Mills previously was Oregon State University’s vice provost of academic programs and learning innovation.

Edward Morton, a Florida Gulf Coast trustee and chairman of the presidential search committee, called the finalists “accomplished, talented and innovative” in a news release.

“FGCU received an outstanding response to our call for applicants, and our finalists represent the top and emerging leaders in the field of higher education,” Morton said.

The candidates are slated to visit the campus in October to meet with students, faculty and staff. Trustees are scheduled to conduct final interviews during an Oct. 17 meeting, which is expected to conclude with one of the finalists being named president-elect.

The state university system’s Board of Governors would consider approval of the trustees’ final selection in November.

Florida Gulf Coast is nearing the end of its search as Florida Atlantic University, the University of Florida and Florida International University are in various stages of replacing presidents.

Florida International last week named Kenneth Jessell, its interim president, as the school’s only finalist for the presidency.
