Florida job search website taken offline after cyberattack

Employ Florida, a job search website that unemployment benefit applicants are required to use, has been taken offline after a cyberattack against its software vendor, Geographic Solutions Inc. Officials with Florida’s Department of Economic Opportunity said the attack did not appear to have breached “state systems” or impacted clients. More from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Florida University System Chancellor Criser announces retirement plans

Marshall Criser III, the chancellor of the State University System of Florida who for the past eight years played a leading role in elevating the state’s public institutions to national prominence, today announced his plan to retire at the end of the year. Criser, the former president of AT&T Florida who was tapped for the role at a time when universities moved to play a more central role in the state’s economic development, told the Florida Board of Governors on Thursday that he felt it was time a good time to step away when his current contract ends. Bidding war escalates, as Spirit Airlines again delays final decision on Frontier merger

For the second time this month, Broward County’s Spirit Airlines has delayed a final decision on whether to go ahead with a planned merger with Frontier Airlines. On Wednesday night, less than 24 hours before Spirit’s shareholders were supposed to vote on the proposed combination with the Denver-based discount carrier, Spirit said it postponed the special meeting of shareholders to vote on the deal until July 8. But a larger and more insidious problem for the venerable Loch Haven Park museum is illustrated — literally — by a simple mixed-media piece of art sold at May’s Orlando Fringe Festival that parodied the controversy. Mote Marine counting 2,700 turtle hatchlings so far, making this season a top 10 record

This year's turtle nesting season will be at least the 7th highest documented on record, according to Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium's Sea Turtle Conservation & Research Program. More than 2,700 hatchlings have been counted so far during the current nesting season, with loggerhead and green sea turtles found sprawled over 35 miles of shoreline. Last year, the conservation program counted 3,786 nests, ringing in 2021 as the fourth highest count in Mote's 41 years of tracking. More from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
