Throughout history, the stars have been a source of awe and wonder for explorers and civilizations far and wide.
Ancient Egyptians and Babylonians were among the first to catalog the stars thousands of years ago. Greek mythology and gods were inspired by constellations, which helped to preserve folklore and stories. For centuries, sailors and travelers navigated using the stars.
The fascination has persisted to this day, as passionate astronomers and casual stargazers alike seek out dark skies away from the city where they can gaze without obstruction into the canopy of faraway twinkling lights suspended overhead.
Amid the urban sprawl and development of modern society, especially present in Florida, it’s harder to find skies that are dark enough to see distant nebulas. This is where places like Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park come in.
