Florida COVID-19 infections rise for third week

New coronavirus infections grew for the third week in a row across Florida as the newest, most infectious version of the pathogen spreads statewide. The state logged 12,984 new COVID-19 cases this week, the Florida Department of Health reported Friday, the most since Oct. 29. The statewide caseload had been dropping between mid-August and Nov. 26. But the virus’ highly infectious omicron variant, first discovered last month in South Africa, was detected this week in Florida. More from the Palm Beach Post, WUSF, and WPLG.

How to turn the Great Resignation into great opportunities

To companies and organizations scrambling to keep up with increased demand, from restaurants to police departments to construction crews, there’s nothing great about the Great Resignation. Coined by Texas A&M Associate Professor of Management Anthony Klotz in May, the Great Resignation — others dubbed it the Big Quit — is a working theory easily visible to any executive, entrepreneur or hiring manager in the region. They see it in the droves of people leaving or quitting, sometimes totally getting out of the field they are in. [Source: Business Observer]

Legal wrangling continues over Florida gambling initiative

A Leon County circuit judge on Friday refused to dismiss a lawsuit alleging that entities backed by the Seminole Tribe are illegally interfering with workers trying to gather signatures for a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow casino gambling in North Florida. Florida Voters in Charge, the political committee behind the proposed constitutional amendment, is racing to meet a Feb. 1 deadline to submit nearly 900,000 signatures to the state to make it onto the 2022 ballot. Please don’t feed the starving manatees. It is actually against the law in Florida.

Wildlife officials have announced an effort this winter to attempt to feed Florida manatees greens like romaine lettuce in the northern Indian River Lagoon to keep them from starving. Understandably, many Floridians are asking how they can help. One thing is clear: They should not feed manatees themselves. “We’d rather as many manatees as possible stay on their normal diets,” said Pat Rose, executive director of the Save the Manatee Club. › One year in, Miami tech movement’s leaders put squeeze on skeptics
We are now one year into the Miami tech movement’s breakneck growth. And if there’s one theme that inevitably comes up when most people talk about the early progress and what’s ahead, it’s optimism. Many of the boosters view Miami in contrast to San Francisco, where, they say, tech entrepreneurs are being driven out by liberals who blame the booming technology sector for the city’s social ills.
