Beyond The Classroom: Caring For The Whole Student

Thomas Rametta | 7/1/2021

Education can enlighten, empower, help solve problems and open opportunities.

Committing to the journey toward obtaining a diploma or degree can also be a life-changing experience. That is why it is important to recognize that effective learning requires so much more than a classroom and great faculty.

For learners who pursue a traditional college experience, their path is likely to include classes, books and instructors who guide their academic journey, as well as housing, transportation, meal plans, social connections with peers and other such support systems. For most non-traditional learners, such as adults making a career shift or those pursuing higher education several years after completing high school, those traditional support systems are not as likely to exist.

At UMA, we aim to help learners from all walks of life, not only through career-focused academic programs but also through the one-on-one relationships, services and support outside the classroom that every learner needs to navigate the systems, challenges and life events that all can influence the attainment of success on any academic journey.

The importance of access, the criticality of care.

In order to be attainable, education must first be accessible. Once it is accessible, learners need support, encouragement and care to give them the best chance at success.

The importance of accessibility for students has been underscored by the Covid-19 pandemic with more and more learners needing and seeking ways to continue their education remotely over the last year. But the need for online access to education has been a reality for many learners long before 2020. To increase educational access to a wide range of learners, Ultimate Medical Academy has specialized in online education for more than a decade, creating impactful, learner-centric experiences that help provide options to people who want to make a career shift but need flexibility to pursue a degree from home or during open windows of time. But online classes alone cannot address all barriers to the learning experience.

Remote learners especially need the relationships, support and care that can be pivotal to their success. At UMA, support outside the classroom is provided during every part of the educational journey. During onboarding, students get assistance identifying a program to match their interests and needs and navigating their financial options. As students progress through their program, advisors can guide them through challenges in and out of the classroom. Students form strong bonds with their advisors, allowing them to be very open about their goals and any obstacles. Advisors help to match students to study groups and resources, provide financial guidance, and prepare students for their career with resume and interview advice. Lastly, UMA graduates have full access to UMA’s support services, allowing them to feel confident as they enter the workforce.

UMA is diligent about ensuring we care for the whole student. We recognize that each journey is unique, and the support that each individual needs will be different.

Educating and supporting future healthcare heroes.

At the heart of it all, the reason UMA does this is simple. We are part of our students’ journey, just as they are part of ours. Our educational mission is squarely focused on meeting the growing need for talent in our nation’s healthcare industry. Healthcare workers have always been essential, but the Covid-19 pandemic has emphasized the importance of the support, service and care they provide our communities.

By caring for our future healthcare workers, we hope, in turn, they are equipped and empowered to care for others. UMA is proud to play a part in creating a steady pipeline of supported workers who are ready to meet industry needs and help ensure a brighter future for themselves, their families and their communities.

Thomas Rametta is President of Ultimate Medical Academy, where he leads UMA’s mission to equip and empower students to excel in healthcare careers. His work includes developing a diverse, talented team to support students throughout their academic and career journey, ensuring the institution operates responsibly and always champions student outcomes.
