DeSantis issues state of emergency as gas hoarding hits amid pipe shutdown

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency as demand for gasoline surged in some areas of Florida and across the U.S. after a ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline, which carries fuel to the nation’s East Coast. DeSantis signed the order late Tuesday that bans price gouging and relaxes restrictions on trucks, something typically done as a hurricane approaches the state. Florida Power & Light debuts new technology ahead of hurricane season

Florida Power & Light Co. hopes a new drone and robotic dog will help to access damage to power lines following storms and reduce the impact to its energy grid. The utility provider unveiled the new innovations during its annual storm training on May 7. The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season ended with a record-breaking 30 named storms, including 12 that made landfall, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This egg-cooking entrepreneur sees downtown Tampa waking up from the pandemic

For years, from his pre-dawn perch at the edge of the city, Dylan Frechette, 33, has watched downtown Tampa wake up. In the Before Times, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., he would crack open 60 eggs for frittatas, omelets and sandwiches, $4.50-$6, ordered with fresh spinach, tomato, andouille sausage, goat cheese and such. Customers often devoured them at their desks or al fresco. “I had the base of people I needed to be busy every day,” he said. Then came the pandemic that upended everything. With plans to hire 200, a former PayPal CEO launches new digital bank in Miami

Two hundred new tech jobs could be coming to Miami in the next two years, thanks to the latest venture from a former CEO of PayPal. Bill Harris, who led PayPal from 1999 to 2000 after serving for six years as executive vice president and CEO of Intuit, said Tuesday he has already begun hiring across engineering, product, marketing, and operations positions for his new global digital bank, called Nirvana. He plans to add 50 employees by year’s end and 200 by 2022. More from the MIami Herald.

JAX LNG tripling liquefaction capacity at Dames Point facility

Owners of JAX LNG LLC say the company will triple liquefaction and double liquid storage capacity by 2022 at the liquid natural gas facility along the St. Johns River. Richmond, Virginia-based Pivotal LNG Inc. announced the expansion in a news release that states liquid natural gas storage at the North Jacksonville site will increase from 2 million to 4 million gallons and liquefaction at the site will rise to 360,000 gallons per day. Florida Aquarium spawns grooved brain coral in lab for second year

 For the second year in a row, The Florida Aquarium was successfully able to make grooved brain coral spawn in a controlled laboratory setting. The aquarium’s Induced Spawning Lab uses computers and LED illumination to create the proper temperature, simulations of sunset, sunrise and moon cues, to mimic environmental conditions of coral in the wild to induce spawning.
