Piper Aircraft has sold nearly 60 of its self-landing turboprops

Mike Vogel | 4/28/2021

Vero Beach-based Piper Aircraft has sold nearly 60 of its Piper M600 SLS turboprops, which come with self-landing technology as a standard feature.

The Garmin “autoland” contributes about $150,000 to the private plane’s $3.1-million price. In an emergency, the tech can be activated to take over control of the aircraft, connect with air controllers and land the plane on a runway. To date, no pilot has had to use it in an emergency. The company says it’s also monitoring developments in electric-powered aircraft.
