????????? Approximately 10 percent of all power outages are caused by animals.
????????? Most animal-related power outages are caused by birds and squirrels.
????????? Animal-related power outages can be difficult and time-consuming to repair, and one animal intrusion in a substation or on a transmission power line can affect thousands of customers.
????????? FPL goes to great lengths to deliver reliable electric service and protect wildlife by installing fences, guards and shields around its power lines and equipment, as well as using avian-friendly construction standards.
????????? When protected species such as ospreys decide to nest on its utility poles or transmission structures, FPL installs platforms nearby and carefully relocates inactive nests. It also monitors bald eagles’ nests and keeps field work at least 650 feet from eagle nesting sites.
????????? FPL has an avian protection plan developed in conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and will soon install motion-activated cameras in select transmission corridors to monitor animal activity and help prevent injury.
