Florida's first aquatic preserve in 32 years a possible snag in federal plans for drilling

The Nature Coast Aquatic Preserve is the first preserve created by Florida lawmakers in 32 years and the 42nd established since the Florida Aquatic Preserve Act of 1975 allowed state-owned submerged lands with “exceptional biological, aesthetic and scientific value” to be classified as aquatic preserves or sanctuaries. Activities such as well drilling, dredging or filling lands and installing structures other than docks are prohibited or highly regulated within the preserves. The tropics are heating up and it’s only July... so what does that mean for the rest of season?

July is typically a sleepy time for tropical systems in the Atlantic basin when early season action gives way to a balm of cyclone-thwarting Saharan dust that can last through mid-August. But on Monday, the National Hurricane Center was watching three areas of interest, including Tropical Storm Edouard, which formed late Sunday as the earliest “e”-named storm on record. Magic Leap appoints new CEO

Magic Leap has appointed Peggy Johnson, a former executive at Microsoft, as CEO of the Plantation-based spatial computing company. She assumes the role Aug. 1. Johnson succeeds Magic Leap founder Rony Abovitz, who announced he would step down late May after leading the company since 2011. More from the South Florida Business Journal.

A sign of the times? Industrial vacancies increase in South Florida

More warehouse spaces are sitting empty in South Florida. The delivery of new construction combined with the pandemic are to blame. “Pre-Covid, we expected to see increased vacancies because of new development. It takes 12-to-18 months to lease up,” said Jonathan Kingsley, executive managing director of office development for Colliers International. More from the Miami Herald.

Orange County may give $5 million to Universal Orlando for new theme park

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings and county commissioners will vote Tuesday on whether to spend up to $5 million more helping Universal Orlando build another new theme park. County leaders will also decide whether to give a tax break to an aviation firm that is backed by a multibillion-dollar corporation and is building a new facility in a development controlled by a billionaire investor. That certainly was the case when collectors flocked to Mandarin on Saturday to attend a sports cards and collectibles show run by Jacksonville Sports Cards. The show consisted of old and new cards along with vintage cards and other collector items.
