On first day of hurricane season, there’s a tropical system to watch

It’s the first day of the Atlantic Hurricane Season…and Mother Nature is wasting no time to remind us that hurricane season has arrived. The National Hurricane Center is now giving Invest 93-L a high 80% chance of development within the next 48 hours as the remnants from Tropical Storm Amanda in the East Pacific move into the southern Gulf. Floridians who have exhausted state unemployment may be eligible for more weeks of pay under new federal program

A new federal program has extended the number of weeks that out-of-work that Florida residents can collect unemployment, a potential lifeline for workers who will soon exhaust their limited state benefits. The Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation was made available May 25, offering workers who have already used up their 12 weeks of state benefits an additional 13 weeks in federal aid. Florida seeks to buy land from citrus company for $28.5 million

Alico, one of the largest citrus producers in the country, has signed an option agreement to sell 10,684 acres to Florida for about $28.5 million. The deal, for land on the west side of the Alico Ranch, is part of the Florida Forever program, according to a statement. If the state exercises its option, the land purchase could close by the end the firm’s 2020 fiscal year. More from the Business Observer.

GEO Group sues Netflix for trademark infringement over use of logos

The GEO Group, a Boca Raton-based operator of private prisons and detention centers, is suing Netflix over the streaming provider’s depiction of its “misappropriated trademarks and name” in its original series “Messiah.” The suit says the series “falsely accuses GEO of detaining immigrants in overcrowded overheated rooms with chain-link fences and depriving them of beds, bedding, sunshine, recreation and educational opportunities.” More from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

‘The Highwaymen’ movie prepares for production in Florida

floridaA new movie called “The Highwaymen” will be one of the first Florida-based films to begin production once the COVID-19 ban is lifted, according to a press release. The film tells the true story of how a group of 25 young African-American men and one African-American woman overcame discrimination in segregated 1960s Florida by teaching themselves how to paint and creating more than 200,000 paintings that would later be identified as the “last great art movement of the 20th century.”
