State university presidents' pay and bonuses rival those of CEOs

As the nation’s student loan debt ticks up to more than $1.5 trillion, the salaries of Florida’s public university presidents are also growing. In Florida, there’s a state law prohibiting taxpayers from forking over more than $200,000 to pay university presidents. But state universities are finding ways to pay presidents more by cutting them paychecks through university foundations. [Source: WFTS]

Bill would let Florida schools keep, administer naloxone

A Florida bill would allow schools to be able to keep and administer naloxone to treat students who overdose on opioids. The Senate Education Committee unanimously passed the bill, SB 120, on Tuesday. Naloxone is an opioid-blocking drug used to reverse the effects of an overdose. Democratic Sen. Jason Pizzo said he decided to sponsor the bill after receiving an email from a 17-year-old high school student. [Source: AP]

Florida Lottery reaches $36 billion in education contributions

The Florida Lottery reached $36 billion in education contributions since its inception. In an announcement on Tuesday, the Lottery said the contributions to the state’s Educational Enhancement Trust Fund (EETF) have been amassed over 31 years. The state's public schools have received more than $11.6 billion of that while college and universities received more than $8.4 billion combined. [Source: ]

Ave Maria University's Board of Trustees has selected Christopher Ice as the private school's next president, the university announced Friday. Educators around Florida are gearing up for a rally of epic proportions in the state capitol early next year, and the Florida Education Association is hoping hundreds of Brevard teachers will join them. On the fourth leg of a planned five-week tour, the state union's big red-and-white bus made a stop at Golfview Elementary in Rockledge Tuesday as part of its "Fund Our Future" campaign, encouraging local teachers to join the fight for higher pay and more school spending.
