Coco Gauff said she thought she might have given her father, Corey, a heart attack during her roller-coaster match Tuesday at the U.S. Open.
She may have underestimated her abilities.
“I think she gave me two or three heart attacks!” Corey Gauff said moments after the match from his first-row seat at Louis Armstrong Stadium. “Man. There were nerves in the beginning and the end, but she showed her fighting spirit and pulled through. So proud of her!”
In a match that made up for what it lacked in quality with high drama, the 15-year-old Delray Beach resident scored her first-ever U.S. Open main draw victory before thousands of screaming fans.
