UF's vet school's new canine cardiac care program
FINANCE
- Ameris Bancorp completed its acquisition of Atlanta-based Fidelity Southern and named former Fidelity President H. Palmer Proctor CEO. Dennis Zember resigned as Ameris CEO to “attend to family and personal matters.” Ameris’ executive offices are in Jacksonville.
REAL ESTATE
- Plant City-based D.H. Griffin Wrecking will begin demolishing Jacksonville Landing this month. Jacksonville city officials will put out a request for proposals to determine how the downtown riverfront property should be redeveloped.
- Joyce Development Group plans to build a mixed-use retail center on the site of the former Baymeadows Golf Club in Jacksonville. The estimated $15-million, 95,000-sq.-ft. development will include a hotel, restaurants and office space.
GOVERNMENT
- In his second-term inaugural address, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry reiterated his campaign pledge to revitalize downtown: “I’m 100% committed to making downtown the heart of this community,” he said. He said he’ll also focus on reducing violent crime and reaching at-risk youth.
INSURANCE
- State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance will close its Jacksonville operations center by the end of November and lay off 300 people. State Farm once employed more than 1,000 in Jacksonville.
MEDIA
- Apollo Group Management bought six Jacksonville radio stations as part of its June acquisition of Cox Enterprises’ radio group. Earlier this year, Apollo also bought Cox’s television group, including two Jacksonville TV stations. Financial terms were not disclosed.
UTILITIES
- City-owned utility JEA says it may abandon plans for a headquarters building in downtown Jacksonville because of a decline in energy and water sales.
ENVIRONMENT
- Jacksonville is testing whether a product used to clean aquariums can cut nitrogen levels to reduce algae in waterways flowing to the St. Johns River. The city’s environmental quality division will treat nine ponds with Microbe-Lift for a year and measure results before expanding the treatments to other waterways.
