A move to eliminate a 90-day Medicaid retroactive eligibility period will continue for at least another year. As he signed a $90.98 billion state budget Friday, Gov. Ron DeSantis also approved a related bill that deals with numerous issues, including Medicaid retroactive eligibility. Under normal Medicaid regulations, patients are able to receive coverage for a 90-day period before they apply for Medicaid. Florida’s new surgeon general Scott Rivkees keeps his UF job, too

Florida’s new surgeon general has negotiated a two-year deal that allows him to remain employed at the University of Florida and keep his tenured position while also being in charge of the state Department of Health. Gov. Ron DeSantis announced April 1 that physician Scott Rivkees would take over the sprawling agency, but Rivkees did not start the job until this month, due in part to working out the agreement. 2 children’s hospitals in Orlando make it to U.S. News rankings

Two Central Florida’s children’s hospitals are among 84 institutions nationwide in this year’s U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals ranking. Eight children’s hospitals in Florida ranked in at least one of the categories. Nicklaus Children’s Hospitals in Miami made it to seven of 10 categories, which is more than any of the Florida hospitals in the U.S. News rankings this year. [Source: Orlando Sentinel]

Florida Blue to provide claims information

In a major turnaround, one of Florida’s largest health insurers is poised to provide 60 million insurance claims to a statewide database designed to help people shop for health care. Jacksonville-based Florida Blue agreed to submit three years of claims data that will show what the company paid hospitals and health care providers, said company spokeswoman Toni Woods. › AdventHealth, Dr. Phillips Center receive $85,000 grant for caregiver, memory loss study
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awarded AdventHealth and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts an $85,000 grant to support a groundbreaking study that evaluates how the performing arts impacts those with memory loss and their caregivers. The grant was one of just 15 grants totaling $724,000 the NEA awarded to support research projects that investigate the value and impact of the arts.

› DeSantis Signs Changes To ‘Direct Primary Care’
Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a bill to expand a 2018 law that created “direct primary care” agreements between doctors and patients. Under direct primary care, patients or their employers make regular payments to doctors to provide certain services, removing insurers from the equation. The 2018 law made clear that such arrangements were not regulated under insurance laws, with backers saying they provide another health-care option for patients.

› Watson Clinic Announces Groundbreaking Event for New Urgent Care Facility
The public is invited to an upcoming groundbreaking event to mark the beginning of construction on the new Watson Clinic Urgent Care South facility. The event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, August 7 at 10 AM from the Watson Clinic South location at 1033 North Parkway Frontage Road in Lakeland

› Mayo spending $223 million on Florida cancer center
Mayo Clinic plans to build a $233 million facility for cancer patients at its Florida hospital that includes “proton beam” radiation, an advanced treatment that Mayo currently provides at medical centers in Rochester and Phoenix after making big infrastructure investments earlier this decade.
